Key Date Wheat Pennies
In coin collecting, a key date refers to the date or a date and mint mark combination of a coin that is rare, more difficult to obtain, and is often the last coin needed by many collectors to complete a series in their collection. For these reasons, key date wheat pennies are highly collectible and more valuable than regular wheat pennies. These are the coins you really want to look out for.
The most desirable coins after the key dates are the coins referred to as semi-key dates, or simply, semi-keys. The semi-key date wheat pennies are less significant than the key date wheat pennies, but are still rare, valuable, and collectible in their own right.
Key date coins and semi-key date coins usually have a lower mintage than other coins in the same series.
